The Lone Ranger

The Lone Ranger ★★

I don't think I've ever seen a movie more conflicted about what it wants to be. The parts that work well are goofy and light-hearted and fast-paced and even insightful occasionally, but it cuts directly from those to scenes which are dark, moody, and depressing. Saying that the two halves are poorly integrated is an understatement: there's no effort to connect them emotionally at all. It's really too bad because some of the movie is genuinely funny and enjoyable, but these moments are ultimately ruined by its schizophrenia.

This movie has absolutely no business being two and a half hours long. Cut it into two different movies and I would actually recommend the fun one.

And now the movie's been nominated for two Oscars and might get a sequel. Read more: bit.ly/1eyXGrE
