Gut-wrenching, hypnotic, emotionally overwhelming even while being intentionally sparse. The untranslated narration of “the devil” sequence highlights just how precisely calibrated this is: It knows exactly when to obfuscate and when to show directly, when to use explicit language and when to rely on you to feel it.

When everyone was raving about SICARIO back in 2015, I felt uneasy about its excesses, its deafening style. This is the honest take on the drug war I was looking for.
