Force Majeure requires you to pay undivided close attention at the 11-minute mark: an avalanche occurs upsetting a ski resort, and a husband in flash response is the only cowardly behaved. What follows is anguished drama of marital unease. There are undeniable displays of sex role reversal, the wife seen stronger than the husband in subsequent social situations. The film has some arresting voyeuristic pull, but I’m going to have to call bullsh*t on it. Only depressed Swedish movie couples have this many endless hypothetical arguments. Ruben Ostllund is a copycat stylist of Michael Haneke, though I will say his ending is top-notch — it bleeds into memory; man on top, but only because the woman contrived to let that happen. Worth a look if you have serious patience. Swedish with English subtitles.
