Definitely the best and scariest TV show ever made up until this point. Some would argue Channel Zero is a close competitor, but I’d counter that while Channel Zero is often brilliant, it’s not actually scary.
I think the thing that’s the hardest to do in horror movies is keep it scary over the course of 2 hours, so imagine how fucking hard that must be to do for ten 45 minute episodes.
Mike Flanagan ALMOST nails it. Hill House begins to sink under the weight of its own melodrama towards the end, but still manages to tell a satisfying story nonetheless. The tonal shift in the last episode is a bit abrupt though. It doesn’t feel fair to the audience to take what’s been scary the entire season - the house and the ghosts within it - and turn it into a kind of schmalzy, saccharine mechanism for emotional catharsis. Idk it’s weird. I don’t know how to feel about the ending.
Worth noting: Episode 6 is done in 5 long takes and is unbelievably impressive in every regard.
