    An extraordinary portrait of disfunction and failure. Akiko is the Mother, hopeless, negligent, abusive and abused. Shuhei is her sad little boy who grows into a hollow shell of a teenager able to be manipulated against the family she believes are responsible for her life.

    Akiko is a psycho, bitch mother of the year.
    Mother is a difficult watch, but a masterpiece nevertheless.

    Variety called Dancing Queens β€˜sparkly but insipid’.
    They got it only half right.
