Sheldon Dugas’s review published on Letterboxd:
I didn’t expect this movie to be a road trip movie, but I’m not complaining cause we got some good stories out of this all. It’s a little unfocused for my taste, but its messaging is clear and powerful. Even in an act of self-defence, we know that Queen and Slim are going to be hunted for killing a cop. It’s a story we all hear too much about, and with the killing of George Floyd this year, this movie perfectly encapsulated what it’s like for people of colour to be living in America and around the world.
Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith deliver fantastic performances and chemistry. They play so well a Tinder date, in that they barely know each other until circumstances forces them to confront some deep truths about them. Melina Matsoukas also delivers a great feature directorial debut, feeling confident right out of the gate. She’s a director I’m gonna keep my eye on now because she wowed me with this movie. Definitely check it out if you haven’t.
