The Mitchells vs. The Machines

The Mitchells vs. The Machines ★★★

The endgame has begun. That? Is that what you're looking for?

From the opening production logo, you know this is going to be a creative fun ride. From the dynamic duo Lord and Miller who delivered us gems like Cloudy with a chance of meatballs, the lego movies and ITSV. I was getting Diary of a wimpy kid vibes, the animation style is visually pleasing and a different kind of slickness. I like how distinctive each Sony animated film is, loved the way the Pug looked.  Great voice work from Abbi Jackson and Olivia Coleman who I wasn’t expecting to hear. I also wasn’t expecting to hear an olddd Rihanna song.

I didn’t find this as hilarious as everyone else, my humour is much more the lego movies and ITSV but I can still see why people love this. It made me extremely happy that there were two huge Tarantino references and many other pop culture references. I wasn’t interested or fully blown away with the story, but every frame was bursting with passion and creativity. A lot of moments could be perfect desktop backgrounds. I can see its underlying messages but I wasn’t as emotionally attached to this as other people. There’s probably things I missed since there is so much jammed into the film, I’ll rewatch this eventually. I wish I could give it 5 stars but something was missing from me. Saying that, this is still another win from Lord & Miller and a solid debut from Michael Rianda.
