Kiki's Delivery Service

Kiki's Delivery Service ★★★½

I don't know if this makes sense but: this is very much a kids film, more than the other Ghibli that I've seen, but not in the way that Illumination or whatever does it that it's lowest common denominator baby humor, Kiki's Delivery Service is genuinely so much exactly what it's like to be a child. I constantly thought of my nieces throughout as they are exactly like this and would react to everything exactly like Kiki, and I think this would be their favorite Ghibli out of the ones I've seen so far. And if I'd seen it as a child I'm certain it would be among my favorites as well. But as I haven't, it was a very good kids film that I saw for the first time at 21 years old and... I loved it! I'm not heartless.

About the kids film comparison, here's a scene from the movie to explain: Gigi, the cat, has to pretend to be a stuffed toy cat because Kiki lost the toy while flying over the forest on her broomstick on the way over. Gigi the cat is visibly terrified because there is a dog, and in a very comic but tense scene, the dog gets up and approaches Gigi. An Illumination movie (not specifically them but u get it) would've made it go the 'Tom and Jerry way,' but here the dog gives Gigi a lick and curls up around him, a new friend. Beautiful, simple, I love you Ghibli.
