Silent J’s review published on Letterboxd:
Tim Burton made a very "different" kind of film. He decided to craft a film that mixed the musical genre with the horror genre. Was it innovative? Imaginative? Brilliant? No. It's just fucking stupid.
Horror and musical are two completely different genres that should never mix together. People watch musicals for something light, dazzling, and energetic. People watch horror for something heavy, bleak, and terrifying. These two elements just don't work together and it shows. If you're gonna do something this stupid, at least make it fun but it's just a self-indulgent style over substance vehicle for Depp and Burton. Much of the actors feel a little wasted because of how poorly the script is handled. Plus, for the musical aspects, these actors can't sing. A lot more could have been done even if this should have never been done at all. Even Depp comes off as really weak. The Academy apparently mistook his hammy cheesefest for "great" acting by even nominating the guy. Not a bad actor, but he's been much better and here it's like he does'nt try. It does'nt help that neither he or anyone in the cast can sing worth a damn. Awful as a musical. Predictable and cheesy as a horror flick. Terribly overrated as a whole.
