    Death Trip

What a MESS. Stand out positive quality is the score which is eerie and discordant. Great cinematography also lends the movie a strong presence. Promising start but does not end up in a satisfying place.

Death trip relies on two horror tropes that I truly despise: Showing scenes from end of the film at the beginning to build tension, and a number of "what it just a dream?" sequences. That combined with really poor editing results in a mess of…

    ★★★★

Very satisfying. I enjoy one location movies, especially if the vibe is strong. The ensemble cast was excellent, Suki Waterhouse in particular. Fun self aware moments, and nods to horror classics like Suspiria. I've long suspected Simon Barrett was the brain behind the Guest, one of my favourites, this breakout and Adam Wingard's subsequent filmography supports that.

This came up in rotation on Netflix this week, and I had never seen it. Bizarre to watch a film, with it's lineage, to have nothing coherent to say about authority, law, technology, or the nature of being human. Convinced this was a psy-op to disguise a pro-authoritarian message, veiled as a "self-aware" sci-fi vehicle. Mega fascism robot, transformers his way around middle class Detroit and everyone cheers? Society owes Verhoeven an apology.

    The Brain

    ★★½

A succinct film about researchers who create a giant murderous brain. Using television the brain begins to sow it's influence and hypnotize the population of a town. Only a single teenager seems immune to it's power. Great creature effects, especially the giant brain, and some eerie touches with the mind controlled town. Campy easy watch.
