Naturally, I was really hyped when I found out that they will be releasing a sequel to Borat, a movie that I’ve seen countless times and that’s definitely one of my favorite comedies of all time. I’m a huge fan of Sacha Baron Cohen, I really think he’s a genius at what he does. I love almost all of his characters, including Ali G and Brüno. I might have made the mistake of overhyping this movie. I just couldn’t love it as much as I expected I will.
Make no mistake, it’s still a highly enjoyable watch, it just lost some of its charm, compared to the original.
One of the problems I had was that Cohen wasn’t able to use Borat’s character for the majority of the scenes because of obvious reasons, and the costumes he was wearing were so over-the-top, I have a hard time imagining people weren’t tipped off by those. I also felt that the subplot was quite unnecessary and it just took away precious minutes of screen time. The movie was also missing moments like the hotel fight scene or when they sleep at the old jewish couple’s house in the original. These pranks and interviews we get here were not as memorable as those to me.
At first I was sad that they left out his companion from the original but what we get here instead is just as good., if not better. Borat’s daughter is hilarious in every scene she’s in. She steals the show a lot of the time. The chemistry between the two is perfect. After seeing the trailer, I wasn’t so sure about using another sidekick but it turned out to be a great decision.
I had really high expectations with this movie and I don’t want to say it didn’t deliver, because there are some absolutely, insanely awkward and funny scenes in here but it’s just not the same as it was 14 years ago. I might be just too desensitized to the craziness that’s going in the world today and I can’t be as easily outraged/shocked as years ago, so that might be the reason that I felt a bit underwhelmed here. Still, everyone should watch this.
My top 3 favorite scenes: the synagogue with the jewish ladies (that costume), the Trump rally with the country song and nazi salutes, the two rednecks
