Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead ★★★★★

To say that 2021 is shaping up to be Zack Snyder's year is putting it very nicely, between his oversized yet entertaining Director's Cut of Justice League and this gruesomely earnest as hell men on a mission movie. He's pulled off something genuinely wonderful here, long but focused and beautifully paced, with an enormously enthusiastic cast committed 100% to the material and enough cheeky needle drops to make Martin Scorsese blush. Meanwhile, the zombie element is even given a special amount of care too, going simply beyond your typical zombie stuff without it feeling like Snyder took cues from Left 4 Dead or something. The whole project reeks of catharsis from beginning to its very bitter end. I've been wanting Snyder to make something to make something as good as his first three films and I'm so happy I'm finally getting my wish this year.

If there was one nitpick I have against it, it's the visual style: Don't get me wrong, it does indeed look pretty good and seeing Snyder experiment with a full digital production like this is interesting. But it lacks the insane operatic bombast his film are usually loaded with. I'm not entirely sure if this was a conscious decision from him or if Netflix gave him some notes, but there's a part of me that wishes Larry Fong was on standby (though he does get a great cameo anyway!). Still, the rewards are high on this one. Give it a whirl, either on Netflix or the big screen.

Side note: Valentine the Zombie Tiger is best kitty and all of you know it.
