  • Hamilton

    Hamilton

    ★★

I remember when Hamilton blew up and was talked about everywhere when it first debuted on Broadway, before mercifully fading out of the cultural discourse. Now, predictably thanks to Disney, it's back in the public consciousness in a way that makes it inescapable again.

People discuss it as though it's a cultural touchstone and maybe the most important work of art in any medium for the 21st century, and become so vehemently defensive of it that you end up with…

    Tokyo!

    ★★½

The first segment is pretty good. The second segment is absolutely abysmal. The last segment, from Bong Joon-ho, is really really good. Honestly not a fan of anthology films that use different directors, I always find them wildly inconsistent.

There's a moment in episode 1 where Spike is dressed kind of like Clint Eastwood's The Man With No Name. That character first appeared in the classic spaghetti western A Fistful of Dollars. That movie was an unauthorized remake of Akira Kurosawa's classic samurai film Yojimbo. Kurosawa drew on the pulp…
