    Tokyo Godfathers

love to see that satoshi kon magic interwoven in a surprisingly grounded and endearing story. perhaps it goes without saying that some aspects have aged poorly but the kindness and themes of found family shine through and make for such a heartwarming (albeit stressful!) journey. i adore this array of characters so much!! 💖

  • Dune

    well. she's dazzling ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

with the power of that good ol' big studio budget and a talented as hell director at the helm, the visuals being impressive became the baseline of my expectations, but it certainly met them. dune is a core emblem of the sci fi canon and an incredible story in general, albeit dense as hell, so i was so happy to have such a well done visual narrative guide to help really cement it in my brain.…

  • I Used to Go Here

    I Used to Go Here

decent, meandering. i couldn't fully understand our protagonist's mindset and motives but she becomes somewhat relatable when you scratch just below the surface. jemaine ily forever.

also there are a MULTITUDE of very...interesting, "romantic" subplots going on, all of which made me uncomfortable as hell. perhaps the point??

  • The Night House

    The Night House

really, really enjoyed this one. grief is not an unfamiliar theme when it comes to horror but the ambiguity and stylistic choices gave it a life of its own here. it went in directions i wasn't expecting and ended in a way that left me with plenty to think about - and i still am, hours later.

(sidenote - performances are great by everybody in this but i was very happy to see sarah goldberg and am now craving barry season 3 more than ever pls)

    Snow Trail

i don't know why i thought i'd escape a kurosawa joint unscathed. very simple story but of course incredibly poignant and human considering the creative forces involved. toshiro mifune aha...ahaha...i'm inventing time travel as we speak

  • The Clock

    The Clock

i was stunned by the last act, truly. romantic fantasy, harsh reality. thank god for smartphones.

  • Birds of Paradise

    Birds of Paradise

conceptually and visually really interesting but, eh, falls short in a lot of ways. didn't fully commit to the surreal aspect enough for me to accept the oddness of the overall plot and character arcs.

favorite part was the weyes blood needle drop in the credits <3
