Beautiful coming of age story with brilliant performances by the two lead child actors. This is the Matthew McConaughey of Season 1 of True Detective rather than his various heartthrob roles. Great supporting performances by Sam Shepard, Michael Shannon and Reese Witherspoon. Story, screenplay, direction, and cinematography combined with stellar performances from the entire cast tell a compelling story of life growing up on the river in Alabama. The two young teens at the center of the story learn first hand about love, loyalty, betrayal, obsession, and murder. 5 stars.
Really good. I had avoided getting around to seeing it because the premise seemed a little too contrived. And it is. But who really cares?
