Some kind of druid dude.
I signed up for Criterion Channel in large part because it would allow me to finally see this. It’d be five stars for Dean Jones’ transcendent moment alone, but now that I’ve seen the whole kit n’ kaboodle (I believed in you, Elaine) my only complaint is I could’ve watched at least another 45 minutes of this. It’s a shame the “Original Cast Album” series never came to fruition, but in lieu of that the great shame is that Pennebaker cut down what must’ve been piles of terrific footage to pilot length for naught. Still, as it is, “I’ll drink to that!”
“I re-seen’t it”. I’m pretty happy to have reached a milestone in my life where lounging in a sweatshirt and sweatpants, laughing a lot while rewatching this for the first time in ages and forgetting my many miseries - all without feeling guilty about any of it - is all it takes to qualify as nearly a 4 star experience (as it stands it’s more like 3.8). If you knew me only 3-4 years ago you’d know that’s an achievement. Fuck it. Life’s short!
