If this qualifies as "fresh" and "unexpected," then the horror genre is in worse shape than I thought.

  • Identity Thief

    Identity Thief

By-the-numbers (literally) comedy wasn't awful. I laughed, but felt bad while doing so.

  • White Reindeer

    White Reindeer

Apparently being shown on the toilet and having sex with ugly dudes is enough to convince film critics that you gave a "brave performance."

  • The Legend of Cool Disco Dan

The Legend of Cool Disco Dan

    ★★

Interesting material, but Dan's story wasn't enough to warrant a feature-length doc. Director supplemented it with stuff about the go-go scene (which was awesome, and primarily what I was interested in), but ultimately it didn't give me much insight into what made Dan tick or why he was considered so important to the DC scene. Scattershot, i guess, would be one way to put it.

    V/H/S/2

Roughly 60% as good as the first one.

  • Prisoners

    Prisoners

The twists that weren't predictable were unnecessary. The performances were over the top. Its sensibilities were incredibly creepy. I was on the edge of my seat for a good portion of it, but I was ultimately unsatisfied.

  • Monsters University

    Monsters University

    Hey, is that Mastodon? WTF?

  • Only God Forgives

    Only God Forgives

I love Refn. I love Gosling. This was the biggest disappointment of the decade, AFAIC. Underdeveloped in the extreme and gives off the stench of "hey let's got to Thailand for 3 months and hang out and I guess we have to make a film too but whatever."
