    As an audiovisual experience, this is beyond reproach; beautiful people in beautiful Armani clothes bathed in beautiful Dante Spinotti light while they walk around beautiful Venice. On every other level, I don't fucking know. I'm shocked Schrader could deliver something this vacuous, it seems like a slow-burn until the end comes and you realize that it was never burning at all. It feigns at mysteriousness, or at eroticism, or at being about poisonous nostalgia or fascism or whatever, but it's ultimately a dull exercise at nothing in particular.

    A slightly more incident-heavy cousin to the Amarcord knock-offs of the world, so of course I loved this. What most sets it apart from that crowd is that it's not structured as a reminiscence, its perspective is strictly adolescent in how it observes incidents both awkward and actively unforgivable and brushes them off with a laugh.
