Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette ★★★★

when you give teenagers complex regal expectations (including foreign policy and battle command), but no real instruction beyond superficial customs things are gonna go bad, man. people have criticized her for it time and time again but i think there's something deeply fascinating about the way coppola indulges in, and then meditates on, the frivolity of the (french monarch) trust fund kids here--between the systemic artifice of the monarch and how well (and naturally) she wears it, this is a compelling painting of antoinette's superficiality as a tragedy not of her own making... entirely, at least.
