Patrick J. Smith’s review published on Letterboxd:
The first time I watched this, it was the edited/cut version. I enjoyed it then so I went to pick up the Uncut version on Blu Ray. The only major differences are erect dicks and a little bit more gore; and this was gory as hell to begin with. Definitely not for those of you that are squeamish.
This is a body horror, techno-thriller set in an alternate 2008 where an elite corporate assassin uses brain implant technology to take over the bodies of other people in order to execute high level targets. It is very reminiscent of something you would see on Black Mirror, except it is way better than any episode of Black Mirror I’ve seen.
The story follows Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough), and she is tasked with binding with Colin Tate (Christopher Abbott), in order to execute Colin’s girlfriend’s father. Colin begins to fight back in order to retake control of his body and his brain, and its a power struggle between the two for the duration of the runtime.
I’m a big fan of high concept, thought-provoking sci-fi and this was right up my alley. I love what Brandon Cronenberg did in this film and I cannot wait to see what he will do next.
If you’re into the Black Mirror vibe and sci-fi, I would highly recommend giving this a look. As of posting this, POSSESSOR is currently streaming on Hulu. Keep in mind that it is very violent, gruesome and the camera does not cut away from that violence.
If you took time to read this, thank you. It’s nice to be back doing something I enjoyed doing for years. I’m not gonna review everything I watched. Just the stuff I want to talk about.
POSSESSOR? I hardly know her!
