The Life of Oharu

The Life of Oharu ★★½

A woman has an affair with a lower class servant that results in her banishment and his execution... that’s only the beginning of the infinite trial and misery she faces.

So this is one of the 250 highest rated films on Letterboxd... makes sense, if you love watching overly exaggerated despair. Scene after scene, it’s in your face suffering that the viewer just has to accept that most of these characters and circumstances are just shown to make a point and to not feel realistic because it’s not. Every person (other than Oharu) is outrageously evil. Every predicament she is in, turns for the worst. It’s a hopeless movie but the reason why it rubs me the wrong way is because the film has no balance. Maybe I’m bias because I hate films that takes such social issues and just torture it’s viewers with travesty after travesty with no filter and no meaning that it comes off so forced and preachy. It’s easily one of the most depressing films I ever watched, which I give credit for but I don’t ever want to see this again. I hate this particular style of storytelling.
