Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead ★★½

No thoughts. Head empty. Just zombies.

Zack Snyder has entered his Bimbo Era. And really, I couldn’t be happier for the guy.

Much of Snyder’s earlier work, including his seminal zombie entry “Dawn of the Dead,” seemed to carry around the burden of grave consequence. There’s certainly a time and place for such baggage in film. But let’s leave that heavy lifting to the likes of the Tarkovsky’s and the Bergman’s.

In “Army of the Dead,” Snyder dispenses with the philosophising, and just gives a heavy dose of what he’s best at: looking pretty.

((The man himself and his films, if we are being honest.))

“Dead” is overlong and overstuffed with side plots and side characters and side arms and side mutilated appendages. But, it’s ultimately just more minutes spent with a group of extremely attractive people who are doing their world the great service of slaughtering the undead in style.

And, as a man who knows sexy when he sees it (or passes it in a mirror), Snyder has an undersung gift for casting crews of actors who radiate hotness over a diversity of races, ages, and body types.

Pretty people killing zombies under the neon lights. Sounds like an ideal date night to me. Just make sure someone brings lobster rolls.
