Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm ★★★

Maybe my favorite joke in “Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm” was Amazon’s choice to release it a few hours early... exactly when the final Presidential Debate began.

It was a viewing choice between two turgid absurdities — a fitting artistic rendition of 2020, if there ever was one.

“Subsequent” might not have the acidic quotability that made its predecessor inescapable and mandatory viewing. It does though, have an actual plot and emotional stakes.

Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova gives perhaps the best comedic performance of the year as Borat’s feral daughter. She is absolutely unblinking in keeping up with Sacha Baron Cohen at every daring and insane turn.

It makes “Subsequent” into an unexpected double act, rather than the gonzo standup routine of the first installment. It’s a better film, but one less likely to be repeated for years inside middle school classrooms.

And for that... a subsequent moviereview thank you to Baron Cohen.
