Pan's Labyrinth ★★★★

Scavenger Hunt #56 - 11 - Watch a film starring someone who has passed away.

I have a secret that I'm going to share with you now: I'm not the biggest fan of Guillermo del Toro? Look, I really appreciate his work and what he does for weird people like me being represented on screen. Those of us who love monsters a little too much, who have found families and trauma we deal with in unique and often fantastical ways. But his films just don't jive with me for some reason? I mean I like them, but except for The Shape of Water, which I loved, indifference is all I can muster for them. I'm not sure why, and I hate that I feel this way because by all accounts he should be one of my favorites.

I thought maybe seeing one of his major Spanish language films might change how I feel, but unfortunately his magnum opus can't even do it for me. I really did like the film a lot, it was enjoyable, and I give it four stars because intellectually I know it is excellent. But I still felt "meh?" about it personally. It had gorgeous visuals of course, and Doug Jones character work is always sensational. I think I liked the actress who played Ofelia best, as I felt more connected to her than I did any of the other characters.

Again, I wanted to like this more because I feel it is my duty as a weirdo to do so, but I just gotta call it like I feels it, ya know?
