Utterly disappointing. Given that the Dahl novel was actually a favourite of mine as a kid and Del Toro and Cuaron were producers, it should’ve been so much better. I can only imagine that Del Toro had a darker more creative take on the story but Zemeckis decided to make it more family friendly. And that the problem; it’s too ‘scary’ to really be considered a kids film but too kiddy to be a film for adults despite the okay effects.…
If Promising Young Woman wasn’t also released in 2020, Marla Grayson would probably be that #girlboss, Yass queen slay you go girl performance that the internet will obsess over and generally speaking doesn’t get much award love in terms of wins (no shade to Rosamund Pike who was amazing, just that Carey Mulligan is that one this year).
The film is okay, it’s deliciously entertaining yet it’s hard to get behind any of the characters as it gets very questionable…
This took a while to get going as a lot was happening at the start but just got better and better as it went. Particularly the ending was very strong. Paced fairly well, although I’m a little mixed on the cast as a whole they did a great job overall. It’s a really blokey movie which I didn’t expect to like as much as I did.
This will probably get better on a rewatch for me!
5th time watch
Pt. 2 in my ‘rich people are nuts’ watches today.
I love introducing this to people who’ve never seen it or heard much about this. There’s just so much satisfaction hearing them laugh at the right places and seeing their surprise when the twists play out.
Still love this film after so many viewings, Parasite remains my favourite film of 2019.
