    Brainscan

I like Brainscan a lot. I feel the need to say that before I tear it apart a bunch.

I don't know how this film exists. How is it so completely in and yet so out of step with 1994? Like, Eddie Furlong's character was me. Not so dissimilar hair, style of cloths, music taste, hobbies... I mean, he even reads a Fangoria that I had back then! My room was basically a small scale version of his room. And…

I remember watching this all the time back in the day. When I was a kid I had this unspoken connection to D.A.R.Y.L. that I am only realizing upon revisiting it some 30+ years later.

    Black Friday

    ★★★½

Except for some cheap looking CGI effects that are relatively sparse, Black Friday has a lot to like. Solid cast, practical effects, anti-corporate/anti-consumerism themes... I'm a sucker for all of it and appreciate its solid pacing and short run time. Total overachiever as far as I'm concerned.

    Son in Law

    ★★★★

I know Planes Trains & Automobiles is most people's GOAT Thanksgiving flick but Son in Law was my headliner this Holiday because... well, how are you gonna follow the fun energy of this one? I feel like Planes Trains would feel almost depressing if I watched Son in Law first. Haha... they're both great though!

The one thing I remember very clearly about this is that when I first rented it, my step-mom at the time wasn't too excited to have to sit through it and it totally won her over. I was shocked. Such is the power of a prime early/mid 90's Pauly Shore.
