Not a film I can revisit often, but it hits the spot once in a blue moon. A fantastic piece of satire
One night, back when I was a sophomore in high school, I stumbled upon this notorious final film by Stanley Kubrick, who was and still is my all time favorite director. I went in knowing nothing except that it's supposedly highly erotic and involves Tom Cruise sneaking into a masked orgy club. I watched it and didn't think much of it outside of its neat atmosphere. I dismissed it as one of Kubrick's weaker films.
Fast forward 4 years later…
A strange film. I feel like it receives a bit too much hate. It's definitely a misfire but a highly intriguing one. It tries to do something unique with narrative and writing. It's like reading a difficult Cormac McCarthy novel. The characters speak philosophical mumbo jumbo which sometimes left me intrigued and frustrated at others.
I'm glad this film exists. I just like how it at least tries to do something new. It may have failed in many ways but I was way more intrigued by it than Scott's horrendous Robin Hood. It's a misfire that kept my interest from start to finish.
