*previously an 80*
A twisted fairy tale for the ages. Certainly much better than every other Guillermo Del Toro film I’ve seen, which rung true even when I initially awarded the film an 80. I rewatched it hoping for the chance to give it a perfect score, but it didn’t feel right. I still don’t think the tone is perfectly crafted, I still think the balance there could have been better formed, but geez if the allegory doesn’t make a hell of a lot more sense now that I’ve really allowed myself the chance to digest it in a way that matters. All of that, and also the Criterion release of this is fucking gorgeous. Cover and all.
