Sound of Metal

Sound of Metal ★★★★½

Wow. Amazing. This broke me. The performances and sound design are just as wonderful as you’ve heard.

Riz Ahmed plays a heavy metal drummer whose hearing is quickly deteriorating and the film follows him down this completely different life path. On paper this should feel like schmalzy awards bait but it is anything but. Darius Marder’s direction is really impressive and he really immerses you into this story.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking this journey with this guy; a character who I wasn’t sure I was going to like or identify with but you really do because Ahmed is fantastic, humanistic, and realistic. Paul Raci and Olivia Cooke are terrific as well. Such a wonderful look at people whose stories aren’t often told in film. I loved everything about this. It hits all the right notes and never falls into cliches. Just stunning filmmaking all around.
