Denis finally has his magnum opus and it has been some time in the making. No other current director is working on this level at this scale with this commitment to emotion. And yes, I know Christopher Nolan exists. The point still stands. There hasnโt been a single moment in any Nolan film that matches Timothy Chalamet and Zendayaโs kiss on the dunes of Arrakis.

Pitfall 1962
Another superb entry in the best debut feature film discussion. A mining corporation hires a hitman to disrupt union negotiations. Two ghosts get involved in the investigation. A stunningly executed anti-corporatocracy gem seen mostly from the perspective of those that often get left behind or simply forgotten.

Dune: Part Two 2024
The face acting in this is exquisite. The sheer spectacle of it all covers a lot of flaws and I donโt mind it one bit. This is what the big screen is capable of. ย We also donโt talk about or respect Rebecca Ferguson enough. Thereโs nothing she canโt do. Letโs get her an Oscar already.
This series and Millerโs upcoming Furiosa should put an end to desert films for a while. Thereโs nothing else that could possibly be mined from this terrain. I also donโt really need to see anyone else try - weโve clearly hit a zenith.

Hauntingly gorgeous cinematography, beautiful scoring and timeless performances by the two leads. Wong Kar-wai does more with single camera setups than most do in entire edited sequences. His decision making in every frame of this film is impeccable.

Oppenheimer 2023
Oppenheimer forces Nolan to remain closer to reality than any film heโs done in several years. He isnโt able to lean on his in-camera tricks, hokey science or huge set-pieces to build all his excitement (though those still exist) and instead attempts to build his tension primarily through dialogue, character interactions and score (of course). Itโs a limitation he desperately needed and one that mostly works really well. Itโs not a perfect film - itโs a bit too crowded, aโฆ
