While the dialog is colorful and Clint Eastwood gives a good performance, the film feels a tad hokey at times.
One of the most self-indulgent expeditions I’ve ever seen committed to film. Ari Aster really feels like a one trick pony after this as his over reliance in referencing the 1973 classic The Wicker Man really shows how weak the script is. This is a well shot, well scored, well acted flop that feels rushed, pretentious, less nuanced than Hereditary and overall, disappointing. It’s a considerable step down and sophomore slump for Aster as a writer and director. Go for the technical aspects but only if you *really* must.
