Absolutely middling just like its stupid title, the audacity of folks saying it's Campion's best since The Piano, yikes; also it's incredibly repetitive in relation to her 1993 film. Benedict Cumberbatch doesn't do much for me despite how hard he is clearly trying in this, the whole thing doesn't bring much new or much interesting to the Western genre. Pretty middle of the road Jonny Greenwood score, not close to Spencer. Some really beautiful shots throughout and I respect the…

There are few things as good in cinema as a half-angry, half-scowled Robert Ryan monologue where he doesn't entirely yell but he does something more, he growls and lets his anger simmer just above the surface. The spinning camera dance shot in this picture makes Brian De Palma look like a joke. I didn't expect this movie to be so good, but alas this is one of the best movies in cinema. The faces in this movie are so good, holy cow these Outlaws look like authentic scumbags.

I watched this in an old morgue which was pretty cool and Halloween-y, however the Blu-Ray skipped part way through and we missed a short period during the house party which made Linda Blair's transition into evil a little abrupt, but that may also be in part the film's breezy (and slightly disorienting) pacing. If I had to fault the film anywhere the pacing is where I…

    Film # 11: Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959).

Sadly, Plan 9 from Outer Space leans more into "so bad, it's boring," than "so bad, it's good." That being said there is some heart to this movie and Ed Wood's spin on b-sci-fi feels extremely influential in its camp.
