What a feast for the senses. Easily the best filmed musical I’ve ever seen.

Sympathy for the Underdog 1971
It's like someone made "Grand Theft Auto: Okinawa" fifty years ago.
Also, probably the closest I've seen a yakuza movie come to a HK-style heroic bloodshed film.

Boulevard Nights 1979
Older wise brother follows younger wild brother into hell in the Mean Streets of East LA. Cliché as all get out, but some things are classic for a reason. This time with a nice gloss of late 70s Chicano low-rider culture and the appropriate race and class subtexts. I’m a sucker for this stuff. Great fuckin cars. Lalo Schrifin does his thing, but I would’ve liked more oldies.
