I'm not familiar with the source material so I can't say how faithful the adaptation was, but coming in completely fresh it was definitely a good movie.
The story was a bit generic, but where it really excels is the visuals and action sequences.
I was a bit weirded out by the "uncanny valley" going on, but I think that had more to do with the chocies to make the facial proportions more anime like. The clothing and lighting effects could've fooled me completely.
I was especially impressed when they were on the hike and you could see the shadows of tree branches with the sunlight shining through reflected on the characters. I was really looking hard to notice lighting differences between the real people and Alita, but it was basically impossible to tell.
Really cool stuff.
