Sound of Metal ★★★★

Hamptons Film Fest

First off I don’t think I’ve smiled that much in a while. There were multiple scenes where I just couldn’t help but have a big smile.

I think this film deserves a lot more love than it’s getting, especially on the performance side. Riz Ahmed is fucking brilliant at times, at times you almost forget that this is a performance. I really hope he can push into that Oscar race. Also shoutout to Paul Raci, who has a minor supporting role but excels when it comes to scenes with Riz. Love the cameos from Lauren Ridloff ( who is great in what I’ve seen her in) and Mathieu Amalric.

Really great sound work too, can definitely see some awards coming in the technical side of this.

My main issue is, that I wish this focused more on one solid setting. I feel like it moves around to much and doesn’t settle on one idea. Around the mid way point it almost turns into another movie, in the way it’s shot, acted, and even in the way the characters are presented. As a 2 hour movie I really wish it utilized that runtime a little better.

But definitely suggest keeping an eye for this when it hits Prime in December!
