I think Yorgos Lanthimos may be one of my favourite current working directors.
Between Dogtooth (HIGHLY RECOMMEND), The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and now The Favourite he has sure proved himself to me.
He's just the right kind of 'weird', I love his ideas and what he comes up with. I'm at the stage now when I can't wait to see what freaky shit he does next. I'd say The Favourite is probably the most accessible of his if you haven't seen his films before.
His movies are always really weird but hilarious at the same time! And the Favourite surely succeeds at that.
Olivia Coleman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone put on some fantastic, enthralling and hilarious performances. This isn't just your generic cliche period piece... if you want a bit of humour and 'wtf was that?!' in your movie then check it out!!
Bonus points for Nicholas Hoult (always a treasure) and Horatio the duck!
