The Mitchells vs. The Machines

The Mitchells vs. The Machines ★★★

As with other hyperactive, overwritten animated films, Michael Rianda’s The Mitchells vs. The Machines overcome its shortcomings with an abundance of imaginative wonder and heart. The setup is pretty smart and quirky: the world is coming to an apocalypse where robots/machines take over the world while a dysfunctional family is the humanity’s last hope to save us all. Rianda and co-writer Jeff Rowe capture the millennial-Gen Z’s preoccupation to phones and social media and the concerning effects of this addiction to social interaction. As for the voice cast, Olivia Colman stood out for her surprisingly deviant voice acting which makes it more special. Overall, The Mitchells vs. The Machines blends childlike wonder and mature grasp to convey its themes which makes it fun, and effortlessly intelligible.
