felt like a misfire when I was viewing it in the same vein as Suspiria (which it does seem to be trying to emulate) but without the lighting and colors to enhance the atmosphere (standout for Argento, should have been commonplace for Carpenter?), then when the twist happened it felt like my eyes were opened and actually I'd been seeing a totally different movie than I thought I had been watching and now idk what to think? Planet of the Vampires meets Walter Hill only not really because this is just 100% classic Carpenter, rehashing thematic, visual, narrative elements from like half of his filmography while breaking new (ish) ground with high concept Sci Fi horror (rather than Horror sci fi). the sets are gorgeous, the soundtrack is incredible, the cast is amazing, the fights are epic, the explosions are layered on top of each other a hundred times but you've earned it buddy. just an awesome time all around

    ★★

the only reasons people seem to be giving this 4.5s and 5s:

    - their parents went through a divorce or they had a messy breakup and it's #relatable
    - they had low expectations for a Noah Baumbach movie and were pleasantly surprised he exceeded them
    - they were impressed by Scarlett Johansson being not terrible this time
    - they're horny for Adam Driver

none of you will remember this movie in 3 months

edit: it's been less than 3 months and this is no longer on the Letterboxd Top 250. @ all my haters get rekt
