    This is a frustratingly self defeating movie. The historical incident it’s based on sounds interesting, but as it says in the opening Resnais is not interested in making a biography, and to be fair I’m not interested in watching one by him, but what he replaces that with feels in search of itself. The story remains enigmatic over where it is going, but does so in a way suggesting Resnais was afraid to give the audience something new from him…

    It’s funny that the only proper Brecht film Fassbinder did he had minimal creative output on because his early career owes so much to his countryman. Even aesthetically where this tableau style sometimes evokes Beckett the stories are pure Brecht.

    The Coffee House could easily have been a Fassbinder original if not for the setting as his terrible pub setting showing the bonds of men and the scythes against women is rooted in dollar bills, or in this case Venetian…
