Strictly Ballroom ★★★½

Strictly Ballroom isn’t anything particularly special on paper — its plot could easily belong to a Disney Channel original movie, and it’s basically Footloose thematically (cultural traditionalism versus individual expression). But Baz Luhrmann’s signature manic camp is on full display in his debut, and his love-it-or-hate-it stylistic flair is enough to keep the entire movie afloat. The editing, set design, and soundtrack are all top-notch, especially given the presumably minuscule budget, and the excellent third act makes Strictly Ballroom a highly enjoyable cinematic romp.
