Southland Tales

Southland Tales ★★★★★

Every American film in one, in order to exhaust this mode, its stars, its drama, its songs. To work through an array of iconography and arrive at an ensemble structure where everyone is a fool and a saint. One of the funniest and saddest and angriest films of the 00s, regularly interrupting itself to confront how full America is with death, with murder, more often than not, committed by cops. Impossible to know what is happening anymore, even difficult to understand why. On one hand, Southland Tales needs you to let go of those ways of knowing, and on the other, letting go means recognizing how fate has become synonymous with dying by gunfire. "It had to be this way." How true are the last lines of Donnie Darko now? "There will be so much to look forward to." / "I forgive you."
