16/31 Horror Film, It's HALLOWEEN!!
This has been one of my favorite movies since I was 9 years old. I bought the VHS as a birthday gift for myself (who else would buy it for me!?) I saw all the sequels before i was 10. I love them all, but why do they exist?
They are all very bad.
This little indie movie that changed horror and movie making forever really shouldn't have sequels or remakes. It's just too damn good, it sits on a pillar of its own legacy. Lightning in the bottle. And while 4, 5 and 6 having amazing aesthetics they aren't scary.
The original is so well done. I don't trust people who say it's not scary, it totally is! (Totally!) The kills are fun/interesting. Nancy Loomis is hilarious as Annie (some guy said 'bitch' in the theater after one of her more mean lines). PJ Soles is iconic as Lynda. And Jamie Lee Curtis is the queer icon of horror! No wonder. Laurie is the big sister, the housekeeper, the book worm. Eternal outsider. Curtis doesn't look, talk, act or dress like anyone else. She is so relatable that way, perpetually 'missing the fun' while subsequently saving the day. Needless to say, she is the quintessential final girl.
I can't watch this movie without craving some of the other Halloween movies. I just have to watch Scream since so much of it wouldn't exist without the foundation Halloween helped create.
