Well that was fucking weird. I was expecting standard backwoods peril and instead got a slow motion deconstruction of the subgenre replete with sinister Popeye cartoons, a genial cannibalistic granny, listing split screen effects and the wonkiest soundtrack this side of wonky town. All strange rattlings and boingings and clanking utensils, which made it hard to tell what was sound design and what was score. Tonally it lands somewhere between intense dread and mildly unnerving absurdity, never settling for too long on either. It's probably a good thing but tbh I'm not quite sure. Devereux Milburn is one to watch for sure.
