Starred Up

Starred Up ★★★★½

A listener recommendation, Starred Up is a great UK prison-drama about an out of control youth who is placed in the same prison as his 'lifer' father. Jack O'Connell plays the youth in question with a confused ferocity, in a much more deserving star-making performance here than his more high-profile appearance as the lead in Angelina Jolie's luke-warm war-time drama Unbroken. Ben Mendelsohn and Rupert Friend round out the main cast in top form but the real co-star is the world-building of Director David Mackenzie and the words of writer Jonathan Asser. I believed I was in a real prison, with its annoying yellow-painted walls, it's complicated characters, and beneath it all the hope that a father can be (or at minimum provide) a good influence on his kid, even in the worst of realities. Loved it, highly recommended.
