Frances Ha ★★★★½

Finally really watched this. There's an element of this being a filmed script, a fantastic script and fantastically filmed. It's Baumbach's Bottle Rocket, with an ending that acknowledges Rushmore. Film does a remarkably good job of creating a character that transcends "quirky," allowing audience affinity for her by not insisting on it. None of the idiosyncrasies is a simple cliché, we instead have the makings of a real person (exactly the kind of phrase that the character loves). So much heart here, and one of the most endearing depictions of friendship I've seen in a long time. Everything about the diegesis says I should hate it, but I love it. I bend the knee to a movie that made me lose my own prejudices.
