The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Hill House ★★★★½

I decided to watch this after I saw the trailer with the kids talking about nightmares their mother would wake them up from. In the trailer it just seemed like a run of the mill horror scene but in the context of the story I was on the verge of tears watching it. Most of Hill House is suprisingly resonant and that’s an important part of what makes it scary. The scariest jump scare I’ve ever seen (sorry The Descent) was in Episode 8 and it was a perfect example of this. It sucked me in with and emotional and tense argument that I was invested in on both sides and when it had me at my most immersed in the scene the scare completely blindsided me and my reaction was similar to the characters onscreen. The horror is completely earned at every turn and the main characters are so well-developed that I feel like I’ve known them since they were kids. Episode 6 is also the greatest and so is the monologue by the caretaker man.
