Stand out: Olivia Colman
Set during the reign of Queen Anne, The Favourite is about two women who fight over the Queen's attention.
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, whose other work includes The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer; The Favourite differs from his previous work because it is based on true events. Lanthimos does a fantastic job at bringing his unique storytelling ability to a true, historic event. His technique works really well with the quirky nature of Queen Anne.
The performances by Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are absolutley amazing. These women have so much talent and it is a joy to watch them interacting.
Queen Anne has had very few, if any, movies made about her. It is refreshing to learn about a different British queen. There are so many movies about Elizabeth I, Victoria and Elizabeth II, it's good for someone else to be shown about.
The fight for Anne's attention is the main focus of the movie. This does mean that the country's conflict is more used as a secondary storyline. This could have been an interesting topic to explore in a bit more detail.
Olivia Colman deserves her Oscar win. She is incredible in this and so are Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. This movie is captivating, much like Yorgos Lanthimos' other works.
