I really liked this movie! I'm so glad I was finally able to watch this, since I did not catch it in theaters last summer.
I loved the performances. Daveed Diggs was absolutely incredible, I'm so excited to continue following his career. Rafael Casal, Janina Gavankar and Jasmine Cephas Jones were also very very good. And so many smaller parts, people with just five minutes of screen time, made positive impacts too, like the mother character or hairdresser character.
This movie balanced comedy with very intense drama beautifully. The balance perfectly done, and neither took away tonally from each other. It was very impressive to watch.
The cinematography was one of my favorite parts of the film. The dream scene and the graveyard scene felt like music videos in how they were shot, and I loved that. Those scenes worked perfectly with the musicality and lyricism present throughout the film. I also loved the use of profile shots and lighting. A specific frame that sticks out to me is the way Val was lit after the reason Collin went to jail is revealed to the audience.
This movie is beautiful in its writing, performances, cinematography and symbolism, and is a very important film to see. I highly recommend it.
