Rewatched. James Deans best performance, and could’ve been even better had he been given the time to develop the older Rink. You can’t help but yawn through the endless drama of the Benedict family. The movie is more than three hours long and 90% is Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson arguing. Jett Rink goes from quiet cow hand, to repulsive oil baron in only a few scenes. This could’ve been an all timer.

This is one of the great plots of any movie I’ve ever seen. The first quarter of this film is quite slow, albeit important. Hitchcock’s unique ability to build suspense and mystique as well as his way of setting the scene visually, without dialogue is extremely powerful. Some of the most important scenes in the movie are shots with little to no dialogue. Monty Clift gives yet another breathtaking performance as you can’t help but feel the great pain of his character. The original ending would have made this a 5 star film.
